An industrial blower motor rated at 230 VAC and 2 kW, a heavy-lift drone arm pulling 5 kg per side, or a 24 V electric forklift drive—these are the applications that force an engineer to stop looking at small BLDC motors and start specifying a big brushless motor. The practical threshold is a frame diameter of 80 mm or larger, with continuous power above 300 W. Below that boundary, standard 28–57 mm brushless motors handle the load. Above it, the design challenges shift to heat, winding configuration, and controller integration—and the supplier must be able to engineer the motor around your exact load profile. This guide walks through sizing, specs, real-world applications, and what to verify before you send an RFQ.
A big brushless motor is any BLDC with an 80 mm or larger frame, a continuous power rating above 300 W, and a stator diameter that can absorb the thermal load without a dedicated cooling fan.
The frame diameter is the first clue. A 57 mm BLDC with a 200 W rating is compact and easy to mount. A big brushless motor starts when you need more torque at low speed or a continuous duty cycle that heats the windings beyond what a natural convection motor can reject. In practice, OEM engineers look at the BL80, BL100, BL112, and BL130 series when they cross the 300 W mark. The power numbers depend heavily on the voltage system, but the mechanical envelope is fixed by the frame.
The two numbers that determine whether a big brushless motor fits your machine are continuous torque at the rated speed and the winding voltage that matches your existing power bus.
Torque and speed are not independent choices. A big brushless motor will produce its rated torque across a defined speed range, and efficiency falls off sharply when you push past the base speed without the right winding. The voltage system matters more than the raw size: a 300 W electric forklift motor running at 24 VDC draws 12.5 A, while a 2 kW industrial blower at 230 VAC only pulls about 9 A. That changes the controller, the cable cross-section, and the terminal design. For high-power BLDC motors, the stator winding must be matched to your bus voltage or you lose 10-15% efficiency from the start.
| Application | Voltage | Power | Speed |
| Industrial blower | 230VAC | 2kW | 3000rpm |
| Electric forklift | 24VDC | 300W | 2000rpm |
| Heavy-lift drone | 44.4V (12S) | 2.5kW peak | 3500rpm |
| Axial fan | 24VDC | 3kW | 4000rpm |
Frame size dictates torque density, cooling area, and the maximum voltage that the motor can handle.
The BL80 series is the entry point for big brushless motors: 80 mm diameter, typically rated 300-800 W, and available with IP65 washdown protection. It is a common choice for conveyors, pumps, washdown fans, and outdoor automation where moisture must not enter the housing.
The BL100 series moves into the 500-1500 W band; it is a common choice for electric forklifts and small wheeled machines. The BL112 series adds low-cogging construction, which matters for direct-drive applications that need smooth rotation at low speed.
At the top end, the BL130 series uses a 130 mm frame to handle 1.5-3 kW in industrial blowers and heavy-duty axial fans. The 230VAC 2kW blower motor is the standard reference for this class.
130mm Industrial Brushless Blower Motor 230VAC 2kW for Heavy-Duty FansThis 130mm frame motor delivers 2kW at 230VAC, built for continuous duty in industrial blowers and axial fans. Its efficient brushless design reduces maintenance and improves speed control compared to brushed or induction alternatives.View Product →
For continuous duty above 1 kW, a properly engineered big brushless motor outperforms brushed DC and AC induction in efficiency, speed control, and maintenance cost.
In a 24 V electric forklift application, the motor must survive shock loads, high current draws, and a sealed enclosure. The BL100 series 100 mm diameter BLDC with 24V DC 300W rating is engineered for exactly this duty cycle, with a reinforced stator and a low-cogging rotor.
24V 300W Brushless Forklift Motor with 100mm Diameter for Material HandlingEngineered for 24V electric forklifts and pallet trucks, this 300W BLDC motor withstands shock loads and high current draws. Reinforced stator and low-cogging rotor ensure reliable, quiet operation in sealed enclosures.View Product →
For heavy-lift drones, the LN10018 series 12S 100kV brushless motor delivers up to 5 kg thrust per arm, making it a reliable choice when payload requirements exceed what a 42mm drone motor can provide.
12S 100KV Brushless Drone Motor with 5kg Thrust for Heavy-Lift UAVsThis LN10018 series motor provides up to 5kg thrust per arm on 12S power, ideal for heavy-lift multirotors. Available in 90KV or 100KV, it offers efficient cooling and durable construction for demanding aerial payloads.View Product →The most reliable sourcing step is to define your torque envelope and duty cycle before you compare suppliers.
Start by writing down the torque at each speed point, the peak current limit, the ambient temperature, and whether the motor will run continuously or intermittently. Then confirm the supplier can deliver a winding that matches your voltage bus, a thermal design that handles your duty cycle, and a connector system that matches your harness.
Retek Motion offers a full range of high-power brushless DC motors plus integrated-controller BLDC motors that eliminate a separate drive box. When you are comparing suppliers, ask about the winding options, IP rating, and whether the motor will be shipped with custom cables and connectors.
The BL130 series is the largest standard frame, rated up to 2 kW at 230VAC. Custom 130 mm designs can reach 3 kW with forced cooling.
No. A big brushless motor requires an electronic controller. Some Retek models include an integrated drive for 230VAC input, such as the BL80 and BL130 series.
Use an outrunner for direct-drive applications like drone propellers or wheels. Use an inrunner when you need high speed and a gearbox, or when the motor must be sealed for a washdown environment.
Retek offers an integrated-controller BLDC series where the drive board is built into the motor housing. For industrial fan motors, the 24V 3kW axial fan model includes a controller, reducing wiring and enclosure requirements.
